Installing the Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition Components

Install the Visual C# 2008 Express Edition
In this tutorial we will install the Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition components which include Visual C#, Visual Basic, Visual C++ and Visual Web Developer. You have two choices for the installation: Online (web) or offline install. In this tutorial we will install those components from the ISO image burned on the DVD, downloaded from the Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition All-in-One DVD.
You need to uncompress the ISO if your DVD reader/writer cannot do it directly. The information on how to uncompress the ISO/IMG file can be found at: Installing Windows SDK (Nero) and Installing the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (Roxio Creator DE).
Take note that if the machine that you are going to install the Express Edition already have Visual Studio 2008, you need to install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 before you can proceed installing the Express Edition.
First and foremost, insert the DVD into the DVD drive. The Autorun will launch the welcome page as shown below. Click the Visual C# 2008 Express Edition link.
Then, setup will copy the required resources to the temporary folder.
Then, setup will load the installation components.
If there is no Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed (in case that the machine already has Visual Studio 2008 installed), the following error message will be displayed.
Click Next for the setup welcome page.
Accept the license agreement terms and click Next.
In this installation we include the MSSQL light version installation. Then select the check box and click Next.
In this case we cannot change the installation path because the full version, Visual Studio 2008 already installed in this machine. This page also provides a summary of the products and components to be installed. Click Install.
The installation should begin immediately.
If there is no error, the installation should complete with the message asking you to restart the machine. Then, restart the computer.
Install the Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition
You have two choices for the installation: Online (web) or off-line install. In this tutorial we will install those components one-by-one from the ISO image burned on the DVD, downloaded from the Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition All-in-One DVD.
Firstly, insert the Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition DVD into the DVD drive. The Autorun will launch the welcome page as shown below. Click the Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition link.
Then, setup will copy the required resources to the temporary folder.
Then, setup will load the installation components.
Click Next for the setup welcome page.

Your fresh installation may be different which can change the default given installation path. Change accordingly if needed. This page also provides a summary of the products and components to be installed. Click Install.

Then, setup will copy the required resources to the temporary folder and will load the installation components.
Click Next for the setup welcome page.
Scroll down the page, read and accept the license agreement terms else you cannot install the program and click Next.
In this installation we already installed MSSQL light version during the Visual C# installation. If you just want to install a standalone Visual Studio component, select the check box for MSSQL 2008 Express Edition. Then, in this installation we just skip this, click Next.

Restart your computer.

MSSQL Express Edition
Many students were asking me where the MSSQL Express Edition is. Before we can access MSSQL through the Visual Studio IDE, we need to make sure the instance of the MSSQL Express Edition service is running. Physically, the default MSSQL Express Edition installation path is shown in the following screenshot.
Similar to the full MSSQL full version, we can check the service whether it is running or not. Open the Windows Services snap-in (Start > Administrative Tools > Services). The service instance should be something like shown in the following screenshot.
If it is not start yet, start the service (SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)). Any dependencies processes will also be started.
Verify the service instance from Windows Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and verify through the Processes page as shown below.
Next, launch any Visual Studio component. In this case we try to create a database (and make connection too) using Visual C#. In the IDE, click Tools menu > Connect to Database submenu.
In the Choose Data Source, select Microsoft SQL Server Database File and click Continue.
If there are already database created, we can directly test the connection using the Test Connection button. Put the database file name, installtest. Click the Advanced button.
In the Advanced Properties page, you can see the details which include the physical path of the MSSQL database file. Click OK to close the page.
Then click the OK button in the previous Add Connection page. Click OK to create the database file.
Then, you can see the created database resources in the Database Explorer.
The following screenshots show the previous steps from Visual Web Developer. It should be similar.
Finally, for Visual Studio 2008 users, there are sample programs for the three Visual Studio components if you select them during the installation. Uncompress those examples in order to use them.
Well, that all and now we are ready to do the .NET and non-.NET programming.
